The cognitive science of the two forces that give your photographs a pulse.

Every photographer has experienced this private heartbreak:

You capture a scene that is technically flawless. The focus is tack-sharp, the exposure is balanced, the colours are rich, and the composition follows the established rules.

But when you look at it, it leaves you cold. It’s a record of what happened, but it has no pulse. It’s an image people look at, acknowledge and instantly forget.

For years, the photography industry has sold "storytelling" as the antidote. But the goal of great photography was never a novel.

The goal is to make the viewer feel something.

After decades studying & applying psychology and overlanding across the continents, I’ve realised that the difference between a snapshot and an unforgettable photograph really comes down to how our very biology processes the world around us.

An image that truly grips a viewer operates on two psychological engines:

  1. The Sensory Engine (Signals): The raw elements that hit the nervous system before conscious thought.

  2. The Cognitive Engine (Signifiers): The subtle, symbolic cues that force the human mind to lean in and search for meaning.

If you want to create images people cannot look away from, you have to understand the neuroscience of how our bodies feel and how our minds decode.

Engine 1: The Sensory Punch

Long before your conscious brain recognises what is in a photograph, you’ve already reacted to it.

In seminal affective neuroscience research, Dr. Antonio Damasio demonstrated that human feelings are fundamentally grounded in physiological bodily states. It means when you encounter a visual scene, your autonomic nervous system instantaneously triggers physical body sensations that we link to emotions—things like subtle shifts in heart rate, muscle tension, and skin temperature (somatic markers). This happens before conscious thought even begins.

These are universally understood across all human cultures because they are hardwired into our survival instincts:

  • The suffocating weight of heavy humidity and rising steam.

  • The stark, cold isolation of falling snow or deep twilight.

  • The radiant safety of low-angle golden light.

  • The tension of an exhausted, slumped shoulder or a clenched hand.

When an image possesses strong sensory signals, the viewer’s body physically processes the environment. You don't have to explain that a desert is hot; the blinding side-light, baking dust, and harsh contrast tell the viewer what they need to know.

Engine 2: The Cognitive Echo

Sensory signals grab the body, but they don't hold the mind.

To give an image staying power, you need the second engine: the Signifiers.

In landmark cognitive science research, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson demonstrated that the human mind takes abstract concepts*—like power, grief, time, and freedom—and unconsciously maps them onto physical, visual cues in our environment. When these signifiers appear in a frame, they act as cognitive tripwires, forcing the viewer to project their own psychological meaning into the image.*

Now, these signifiers are myriad and varied, and unlike the sensory are also nuanced by a viewer’s culture, but I’ve found ways to simply classify them when I’m in the field behind the lens:

Status & Hierarchy: Things like a tailored uniform in a dirty alley, a subject photographed from a low, towering angle, or an imposing architectural monument. These signifiers tap into our innate motive for power and achievement. The brain instantly calculates who holds dominance in the frame.

Vulnerability & Care: Think a child's guarded backward glance, weathered hands holding a fragile object or a frayed collar. These signifiers tap into our deep mammalian drive for nurturance and belonging. It triggers immediate empathy and protective concern.

Nostalgia, Time & Decay: You might see rusted iron & peeling paint, an abandoned machine being swallowed by earth, or deep shadows crossing an ancient doorway. These signifiers tap into our existential confrontation with mortality, impermanence, and the passage of time.

Autonomy & Freedom: Perhaps it is an unbroken desert road vanishing into heat haze, a lone traveler standing on the lip of a canyon, or an open door looking out into vast space. These signifiers tap into our motive for agency and discovery.

The Pinnacle Frame: Firing Both Engines

A photograph with only sensory signals is a beautiful mood piece.

A photograph with only intellectual signifiers risks being a dry editorial record.

The masterwork happens when both engines fire together.

Look at this abandoned bedroom in the ghost town of Kolmanskop, on the edge of the Namib Desert:

The Body Feels It: The soft, warm morning light rakes across the doorway. You physically register the dry, muffled stillness of the space—the cool shadows clinging to peeling blue paint and the tactile, silent grit of desert sand burying the floorboards.

The Mind Questions It: Your brain encounters a contradiction. Seeing the desert consuming a domestic home forces an immediate confrontation with our own mortality—the fragility of human ambition, the passage of time, and nature’s inevitable reclamation of what we build.

When sensory signals collide with human signifiers, a photograph becomes something felt not just seen.

So What? 3 ideas behind the Viewfinder

  1. Audit the Senses: Before you press the shutter, ask yourself: What does this place feel like? Is it bone-chillingly cold? Suffocatingly humid? Blindingly bright? If your frame doesn't capture the senses you feel you’re cutting out that emotion from your frame.

  2. Hunt for Signifiers: Find the worn artifact, the slumped posture, the contrast in scale, or the guarded gaze that points to an evolutionary theme—power, care, mortality, freedom.

  3. Don’t let Intellect Contradict Mood: If you are trying to capture the quiet vulnerability of an artisan, do not shoot them in flat, bright, cheery midday light. Use the sensory to amplify the signifier.

Give the viewer's body something to feel.

Give their mind a cue to decode.

And let their own imagination do the rest.
