Lightroom sells presets. Cognitive neuroscience explains why the best edits are acts of ruthless subtraction.

Wandering through the claustrophobic alleyways of the Marrakech medina is an assault.

The air is thick with roasted cumin, cedarwood smoke, and diesel exhaust. Mopeds brush past your shoulders, merchants shout across narrow corridors, and shafts of North African sun pierce through slatted roofs.

Stepping past a crowded doorway, I caught sight of a butcher at work. He was framed by hanging sides of beef, handwritten chalkboards, bundles of fresh mint and a constant chorus of customers.

I raised the camera, composed the frame and pressed the shutter.

Later that evening, sitting with my laptop, I opened the unedited RAW file. It captured the glorious chaos, but to work as an image, it had to be tamed. It needed to be honed to bring out the signal in the frame.

Back when I was a beginner, my instinct—the same instinct that plagues thousands of photographers in Lightroom—was to treat post-processing as an additive game.

Lift the dark shadows.

Boost the red saturation on the meat.

Sharpen the textures of the tiles.

But that would completely destroy the photograph.

Slap on a warm preset to make everything "pop"? That’s like turning every instrument in an orchestra up to max volume and calling it harmony.

After years behind a lens - and an editing screen - I’ve realized that great editing has nothing to do with "style," presets or software sliders.

Great editing is an act of ruthless cognitive subtraction.

Hong Kong. A camera sensor records photons as they are. Human attention is a scalpel that hunts for the single still point in the storm.

Your Camera is Dumb. Your Brain is a Scalpel.

To fix your editing, you have to understand the difference between a camera sensor and human vision.

A camera sensor records data, not meaning. It doesn't know what the subject is; it just sees light on a grid. Left unedited, the clutter in the background gets the exact same priority as the story in the centre.

Your brain, however, is a ruthless filter.

Human vision evolved for survival, not cataloguing pixels. If your brain processed every scrap of visual data, you would collapse from sensory overload within seconds.

Instead, the human visual system relies on selective attention.

In foundational cognitive research, Dr. Jeremy Wolfe established the Guided Search model, demonstrating that before we consciously recognise an object, our brain constructs a rapid 'priority map'—filtering out low-priority noise and guiding our eyes only to what is relevant.

When I was standing in that souk, my brain filtered out the background noise automatically. I didn't notice the distractions or the customers lit by other lights because my selective attention suppressed them.

The problem is the RAW file captured all the junk my brain ignored.

I see too many photographers try to fix an image by making things louder—cranking up local exposure, sharpening edges, pushing saturation.

But the key thing to me is how you make the signal you saw in that original scene stand out.

That often comes from turning things down, not up.

When you open Lightroom, stop asking what to add. Look for what is competing with the Signal and use three subtractive moves to sharpen it.

The 3 Moves of Subtractive Editing

Namibia. Shadow is a cognitive scalpel that cuts away everything non-essential.

1. Kill Rogue Highlights

The human eye reflexively jumps to the brightest point in a photo.

If a background element carries higher luminance than your subject, your edit breaks.

Look at this portrait of a Himba girl in Namibia. The natural instinct would be to lift the shadows and show more of the context. Instead, allow the darkness to completely swallow the background.

Shadow is not an absence; it is a cognitive scalpel that cuts away everything that doesn't matter.

Because it doesn’t matter.

What matters—the Signal—is the mother’s quiet, unflinching gaze at her child.

2. Drain Distracting Colour

Saturated warm tones (reds, yellows, oranges) command immediate processing in our brain.

If your background is full of competing colours, you split the viewer’s attention.

Desaturation is not a lack of colour; it’s a boundary that stops the landscape stealing the spotlight.

Because the mountain isn't the hero.

What matters—the Signal—is the solitary presence of a wild animal enduring in an empty world.

The Pyrenees. In vast landscapes, micro-contrast everywhere creates fatigue. Let the eye follow the light, not the clutter.

3. Manage Texture

Micro-contrast and sharp edges act like visual velcro. When you crank global "Clarity" across an entire scene, every leaf, pebble and brick is given equal textural weight.

In a vast landscape like the Pyrenees, this creates chaos.

By isolating micro-contrast and sharpness strictly to what matters - the stone monastery and its slate roofs - while letting the surrounding forest stay soft and dark, the brain effortlessly follows the flow.

Restraint is not a loss of detail; it is an act of direction.

Because the forest isn't the destination.

What matters—the Signal—is the divine, golden light falling across the abbey, turning an ordinary mountain into a moment of pure reverence.

The Higher-Order Question

Presets sell the lazy myth that a single slider adjustment can give your work a "look."

But a preset is just mathematical paint dumped across millions of pixels.

It doesn't know where the visual tension is.

It doesn't know what made you raise the camera in the first place.

The next time you sit down to edit, stop asking:“What style do I want to put on this image?”

Instead ask: “What is the Signal in this frame, and how do I breathe life into it?”
